My spotted got nailed by my pleco and the pleco removed over half the protective slime coat on him and he got a fungis infection. He seemed to be doing better after I medicated the tank but today his right eye is cloudy and his fins are now rapidly deteriating. The only tank I have to isolate him is a 10 gallon, he is 13 inches long so I am not sure if the cionfined spaced will stress him out even more.
As I said I treated the tank for the infection as well as adding stress coat to help with loss if his natural slime coating, any ideas????
And yes the pleco was removed to stop any future attacks.

You did not state what meds you are using. You could try Binox or Maracyn plus and a bit of salt, 1-1 1/2 tbs per 5 gallon. Stress coat or melafix (not both) should also help but it sounds like the gar has a systemic bacterial infection.

Spent the better part of the day swapping fish from all six tanks to get my 55 as a hospital right now.
I am useing KORDON AQUAHERBALS (for the fungus) as per directions and STRESS COAT as per directions in the tank now. I will add salt before I go to bed.
His tail is 90% gone at this time, dorsel fin is 50% gone as well and the cloudy eye. Never had a sick fish in my life, so all this is new to me as far as real life treating, I have read up on infections and such and have book klnowledge so my "on hands" is no-existant". How offten should I medicate the tank? and how long should I keep him isolated once he starts to recover. He tries to swim around so I am taking that as a good sign, any replies are appreciated. Also what is a good feeding scheduale for him, he has only eaten live fish, should I wait a few days and put 4-6 feeder in there, or wait longer for recovery? He was a good well feed size before this started and has lost some size, but still is a little plump, just not like before.

i would use the salt as someone else said and do frequent partial water changes. as for the fins if you keep the temp up in the low 80's they regenerate pretty quickly. mine had a slight fungus when i got him because he was stuck in a small tank w/ two jack dempseys that picked at his fins til they were pretty badly damaged. i just used "ick away" that i bought from walmart because i was new to all this and didnt know about the salt treatment and heat...but anyway his fins are almost back to 100% and he is very healthy. i would probably watch the food youre using because feeders sometimes carry funguses of their own. but i do feed mine them. good luck!

It sounds like your on the right track to fixing this. I would not worry about feeding for a bit as the fish can go some time without feeding with no ill effect. Once you get the condition under control..... the fins, as mentioned above, will quickly grow back.

Sorry to post that he died a few hours ago. I knew that he was bad but I did not have a tank that would allow me to seperate him from my other fish (mostly due to his size) and I started a more controlled and stable treatment too late in the stages. looks like I now have a reason to buy a 7th tank.
