Hi guys
I added 2 golden severums (about 3 inches each) to my community tank last week. After 2 days they started hanging out at the top of the water and closed their dorsal and anal fins and have some red lines in them as well and the tip of the fins seem to be rotten. They eat but not much. Before adding them I had added salt to the water to cure the ick which my fish had before. I was wondering if a lot of salt in the water would cause this kind of behavior for severums or is it something else. Last night I did a 50% water change and I'm planning to do another one in 2 days to lessen the amount of salt in the water.

Any ideas how i can treat them, they are real beauties and I hate to lose them :(

P.S my other 4 golden severums (which are much younger and smaller) have been in the tank more than these guys, they are OK and no sign of any red lines or weird behavior in them.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks so much for all the kind replies. You guys made me feel right at home! :)

what size tank?
what fish and how many?
ammonia/nitrite/nitrate readings?
water change schedule - how much, how often?
was the ich cured before you added the new severums?
how much salt/gallon?
did you QT the new severums in a separate tank before adding them to the community tank?

Salt seldom does this and severums are quite tolerant of salt, The symptoms sound like bacterial septicemia and this can be treated with oxytetracycline or binox.

Before you put them in to the community tank did you quarenteen them.. now i hope you have a small hospital tank to treat them or you will end up treating your whole tank whether the other fish need it or not.. i hope you save them .. but i would definitly get melafix and or antibiotic for them.best of luck to you. And if possible could you post some pics of them..because it is so much easier to diagnose if seen.

I bought a separate tank for them 2 days ago. added some Tetracycline to the water and put them in. they seem to be doing much better now, they are swimming around and actually eating green peas :) I'm going to feed them some of my mixed beef heart/spinach/green pea home made food and will change 30% of the water in 2 days.

Any idea how long they can be in the water containing antibiotics (Tetracycline)?
