I have a rena xp3 with an ehiem 2128 on my 120 gal. this filter is quite, and works perfectly but I have to clean it about every three week. I clean the ehiem twice a year. think I'll get another ehiem. anyone else clean these as much or is it just me?

I never have to clean mine that often. Maybe its the difference in filter foam, possibly that the Rena might be doing a better job.

We better test it though.... send it to me and I'll have a look. :D

yup. the fact that it gets dirty and the eheim doesn't is probably a good thing for the rena.

the media you have in the rena might actually be capturing the debris while your eheim doesn't.

having said that, it should go longer in normal situtation but maybe your tank has dirty fish etc.

I would get another rena :)

Not sure if you realized the irony....substrat pro is an eheim product.

Anyways, I have 2 xp3's running on my 125 gallon and I clean them about every 5-6 months....whats triggering the cleaning? do you have lots of algae growth inside the filter? Maybe its just the light and the eheim's green is hiding the algae better than the Rena blue (which is a very tacky 1970's blue).

I use ehiem media in the rena. same as my ehiem. it's not so much the sponges on the bottom as the micro filter pad on top. It becomes so dirty that it slows down the flow after only a short time. maybe I'll try some floss instead. I'm an old timer and a ehiem user from way back. I'll probably get another 2128 and keep the rena as a spare.

my xp3 does this as well. i think i overfed but it was about once a month i had to rinse out all the polishing pads. regardless, i have one xp3 and two xp4s. they seem to all be working great and i dont have the money to spend on an ehiem.
