Yesterday i added two african dwarf frogs to my 5 gallon Hex. This morning, my betta has a white face? I'm not sure if the frogs brought a disease into the tank or if one attacked him. He seems to have no trouble swimming but is swimming slowly as if in pain, and is just hanging out in random spots of the tank instead of his usual spastic self. tried to feed live fruit flies and he showed no interest, when he usually hunts them down with relish. he and the frogs seem to be ignoring each other this morning. when i added them, the only aggression was on his part, he gave each a few nips before going on his way. i wonder if he was messing with one and it fought back? Aquarium has been dosed with bettafix, just in case this is a wound, to prevent an infection. need to make a trip to the LFS anyway to get bloodworms, now planning to pick up aquarium salt as well, any other medication suggestions or a loose diagnosis?

Jareth passed while I was at the LFS buying medication. Lesson learned, have a first aid kit beforehand.

Wow, that sucks...

In my experience, African dwarf frogs are not aggressive at all. They might have brought in something, but doubtful. Check you water quality. Add a new betta when you are sure that things are determined to be cool.

had water checked when i went to LFS. said i had low nitrates but everything else was good. one of the frogs seems to be on it's last legs now, what i get for buying on a shipment date, but if i waited they'd all be gone. ironically the other frog i bought because i felt sorry for it. it has a withered hand i guess from a birth defect or some trauma when it was smaller. there is no open wound and that frog is darting around like it owns the place...

Judging by the appearance and time of death from first symptoms, columnaris is the culprit here. If it had started somewhere farther from the brain or other vital organs you might have had a chance. Sorry for your loss. I once lost a whole tank to this and it only took two days to kill almost every fish in there even though I dosed right away. Don't blame yourself, it's a learning experience.

*This is what taught me how important quarantine tanks really are.

Sorry about your loss.

I recently successfully treated what I believe to be columanaris with kanamycin (spelling?). I tried a maracyn 1 and 2 combo first and it didn't work. Just wanted to provide input in case someone else has the same problem.

I appreciate it, everyone. Sadly the frog died during the night. It was spastic at the LFS but much calmer after I got it home. I guess ill have to chalk that one up to shipping day stress. Unfortunately, if you dont get them the day they ship, they're all gone. Guess everyone is restocking those horrible "Frog-o-Spheres" they got at Brookstone *shudder*. Plan to add another betta to the tank, but not for a month or two. Do i need to treat the tank to get rid of the bacteria or will the "quarantine" get rid of it?

... And now my other ADF seems to have hurt her leg. :swear::wall::cry:Maybe I should just give up and keep a shrimp and snail tank for a while. The 3 RCS are doing great. All three have saddles, looks like they'll lay eggs soon. wish I had a male though. Private LFS owner gave me all females after I said I was hoping they'd breed.
