got a new baby oscar last week, and hes been loosing some scales on one side.. could it be so that the bichirs have been chewing on him or is there some scale-dropping disease?

It could be a lot of things, him scraping against a decor, other tank mates picking on him...As far as scale dropping disease....I don't think so????

hmm ok.. lets hope so. But he looks kinda scabbed, theres also some white on the small fins near the gills, and the skin on his stomach lookes cracked (like a bodybuilder).

Also, I think hes having a hard time doing number 2 because hes rectum is really swollen. I was feeding it hikari staple, which might be too big since hes only a few inches? I switched to goldfish pellets yesterday but havent seen any improvement. Is this common?

Turn the temp up slowly to about 82degrees add some salt. That should take away the "white spots".
Shelled peas should be fed. It acts like a laxative for em.
O's are very messy fish and require pristine water conditions all the time.
Try not to have any sharp or rough decors as O's can be clumsy and run into it.

Keep an eye on the bichirs or any other bully tank mates.
