Hi,

I have 6 red-eared sliders. I've been building them a new pond, and had them in a temporary holding tank. I was so focused on the pond, I didn't give them the full care and attention they needed. I finished the pond and moved them today, but one looked sick. Her eyes were swollen and puffy, and she had a patch of discolored skin on her neck. I had noticed that she had been spending almost all the the time out of water and not swimming around. The rest of the turtles seem fine, and love their new home.

I moved the sick one to a box with a heating pad under half of it. She is sitting right on top of the pad. I think the heat is helping. What should I treat her eyes/neck with? Do you think she has a respiratory problem...I read that is common with them? I plan to put her outside tomorrow in a large empty tank with half shade/ half sun, and give her short baths of water to keep her hydrated (and see if she will eat.) Any other advice?

Thanks,
Stefan

Ok, yup your turt is sick and needs imediate atencion but if all goes well it should recover in about 1,5 weeks;) And your rigth in considering she may have a respiratory infection, respiratory infections and eye problems are like cheese and bread, best friends (even if turts with eye probs tend to land in a futile atempt to recover) First of you did well in putting her warm in the heat pad. Next you need to see a vet asap, she needs antibiotic, the good news is that what will treat the eyes will also help with the lungs. Next you need both to open her eyes to let the infection out and to clean them. For that go to a pet store, get a turtle eye solucion, moist a cotton swab with it and very gently try to open the eyes and clean them. The vet or another person may have to hold the turtle and keep it still. Prepare yourself because its very likely that pus may be there, in early fases its liquid, later is solid and looks like small chunks of cheese. IT HAS TO COME OUT! Also make shure it never happens again, wich is simple even with many turtles:) Keep your eyes on your turtles, give them a very varied diet with lots of greens, clean regulary their water and avoid freeze dryed gammarus. The outdoor pond ts a great idea;) Dont forget to keep your sick turtle isolated for at least 1,5 mouths before putting it back with the others and of corse make shure is 100% healty

Her eyes aren't that bad. Taking to the vet is not really an option, but I am keeping her warm with plenty of sunlight, and 2x20 minute baths a day in warm water. How do you feed green vegetables to your turtles? Do you just let the veggies float around the top of the water?

What about water additives? What's in those turtle sulfa blocks?

Well Im sorry but if you dont her to a vet your very likely going to loose her if she indeed has a respiratory infection:( Nothing that you can do at home will clear it up, it will only get worse and worse, wich is kind of sad because with antibiotic injections that would clear quite nicely, please reconsider, it wouldnt be that expensive. Imagen if you couldnt coff (turts dont have diafram, so they cant coff) and felt your lungs get more and more congested with a tick porulent liquid, you had to stugle to take each breath untill you couldnt no more and died of asfixiacion. THATS THE KIND OF TURTURE YOUR TURTLE WILL HAVE TO COPE WITH THE NEXT WEEKS OR DAYS! All it would take is some injections of baytil wich is avaible in every veterinary clinic, even a normal vet could take care of that. The injections are subcutaneous in the turts arm pits.
Dont waist your time with sulfa blocks there is nothing there to help you. You need turtle eye lucion avaible on pet shops from several brands. It will be needed in conjuction with the injections.
As for vegetables you leave it to float on your tank. Most turtles specialy if they never been fed veggys will take several weeks or mouths to eat them consistently but is worth the efort. Of corse inicialy leave only a leaf or 2 untill they get used and replace daily

After just a couple days of heat/sun her eyes are totally clear. She still has a small patch of discolored skin on her neck. How to treat that?

Not sure she ever had a respiratory infection...I just asked because I've read they get them a lot; but she has no symptoms. I'm willing to put time and effort into her health; but not a lot of money. Please advise how to treat the skin problem, preferably with items from a drug store. Epsom salts, would that help?

You dont need any of thouse, the sun will clear that out, also is very frequent for some sliders to have small scars on their necks wich can be what your descriving, specialy when several are housed thogether. Its very easy to know if she has or not a respiratory infection. Put her in a small aquarium with deep water. A healty slider will dive and come back for air with no efort and wille she breaths she will float simetricly. A sick slider will not dive, insted it will float like a peace of cork, probably it will try to get away and after some time after it setles down, it will float assimetricly, one lung causing the floating.

It's not floating...so I think she's ok with the respiratory system. But I think she has a small patch of fungus on her neck. I have been giving her sun and salt baths. Is that a good plan?

I guess that does sound pretty bad...what I meant was; I'm kind of a do-it-yourselfer when it comes to my critters. I almost never take them to the vet. However, if she really needed antibiotics, I'd get some and inject her myself. It's just that we have so many critters out here that I just can't afford to take a free pond turtle to the vet. But I do have compassion for the critter; and I realize my responsibility as the caretaker.
