Sick Red Empress

Hello I need some help treating my Red Empress. I have a 130 gallon Peacock Hap mix, the tank has been running since before Christmas and I have just finished stocking with fish from Quebec Cichlids a reputable breeder here in Montreal. My fish have been just fine untill yesterday I noticed white marks on my Red Empress. I removed him from the tank into a small hospital tank I have set up. I them added a drop of Seachem`s Paragaurd. This morning I woke up to find him covered in red sores... Ugh! As far as medication goes I presently have Maracyn, Melafix, Paraguard, and epson salts. I then added some melafix to the water as it says on the bottle that it is recommended for red sores. Please help! Any advice would be appreciated Thanks Picture atttached Fish died thanks anyway

A bit confused, so the fish ended up dying? Sorry for the loss. Are any of your other fish showing any signs of a problem or whether the disease spread? If not you might be in the clear, but make sure to watch carefully for any changes in behavior or coloration for the next few weeks just to make sure you don't get a huge problem.

I will comment that many diseases are caused by poor water quality for one reason or another. I would suggest you check your water parameters to make sure nothing is out of whack. How often do you do water changes, and how much do you change each time? When was the last time you gave your substrate a good vacuuming (removing waste from top of sand or getting down into the gravel, whichever you have)? You also mentioned that you just finished stocking the tank. Is it possible that you overwhelmed the beneficial bacteria and a weaker fish (the red empress) succumbed? Or was the red empress one of the new fish and maybe picked on?

Just a few guesses so that you can narrow down what happened. Again sorry for your loss, always sucks to lose a fish - but it is still a newish tank so keep at it and just make sure you are doing the necessary maintenance.

Hi thx for the reply I have been on top of the water parameters Amm 0 Nitri 0, nitrate 15-20, PH 7.8. I have 20 or so africans in this rather new tank (cycled at christmas and added fish in four or five bunches through the month of january)Everything has been great so far I'm running a fluval fx5 and a eheim 2217,and two 250 watt heaters. The fish are stunning! The Red Empress was just starting to really show his colors and eating alot(certainly getting his fair share). And just out of nowhere I noticed white patchy marks on his body and his fins were clamped. I removed him and into the hospital tank he went. 9 pm last night. This morning he was covered in red sores at 7 am, and buy 1 pm he was dead! luckily my other fish seem fine and I am keeping a close eye. There is minimal debris on the sand floor and I have been vacuumming when needed, and I am doing 30 per water changes every Saturday and test regularly. Any idea what this might have been? Parasites, Disease? Thx

Well sounds like you are doing everything right. I am not very good at identifying disease, so unfortunately can't really help you there. Wish I was better, but at the same time I usually learn more about things when I have to deal with them - so I guess hopefully I never have to learn. Anyway, I hope someone can help narrow down the cause/disease.

I will add that your tank looks great, but you do seem to have at least one mbuna. It pops up on the bottom-left portion of the screen throughout the video and then swims along the bottom. Looks like a yellow lab to me. Probably won't be any problem because they are one of the most docile mbuna, but just wanted to let you know.

Hope you don't have any more problems.
