in the river
my one of my redfoots has decreased in eating infact havent seen him eat for a couple days...i normally feed romaine daily with ocassionally cantalope, hibiscus, and carrots. His eyes are watery and he keeps them closed alot and he runs frantically to the shade when i bring hime out to soak in their soaking area. i know this could possibly be a lot of things including diet and conjuctavitis any one have expierence with this...

im going to try and clean his eyes of the watery matter and give high Vit A foods like carrot for a couple days and see how he does.

do you think i should seperate the two till he is back up to health.

or have anymore hint/ideas to help in the healing process...

thanks all

I don't know what to tell you Viced, I've never had tortoises before. What is your indoor enclosure temperature? You bring your two Redfoots in at night, right? I hope it's not some sort of respiratory infection.

Yes seperate this one from the rest, and take the tort as soon as you can to a Vet that specializes in exotics. I'm not a vet, but I would say that the tort has a respitory infection, and requires professional assitance asap.

ok they are in a 52gal rubber maid container during night and most of the day with organic potting soil changed ever two to four weeks, constant acess to water and feed daily the diet mentioned in original post. i put them out during the day while im home and check them frequently and today a few hours after i posted this he was doing better he was walking more stabile...i start my new job at a vet clinic (as im going to school to be a vet) and i start on thursday and im bringing both guys with me so they can teach me to run the fecals and what not on the torts and get them dewormed if they test positive ( and maybe even if negative as a precaution)

so i let you know around thursday friday time frame how he is doing...
thanks all

Whats your humidity like? Redfoots can look teary if the humidity isn't high enough. I assume you dampen the indoor enclosure?
Wash his eyes and make sure there isn't any muck in it. Also make sure the temperature in the shade - or wherever he likes to sit - is high enough. You might need to swap things round so the hide isn't in the coolest part of the enclosure while he's getting better. He might be hiding in the shady bit because it dries out slower there.
Maybe try him on some darker greens, the only ones I tend to use are spring greens. Perhaps some berry fruits or fruits with stones too - extra ripe alays goes down best.

You are right to seperate them. I have a red foot in the same boat at the moment. I have given it a couse of Baytril and a warm soak for 20 mins every night. It has been a slow road but is now coming around. They do need a humid environment and fresh clean water every day. Mine went off her food big time but is now taking mushrooms, fruit and a small amount of cooked chicken. It loves banana which is an occasional treat and also used for loading with nutrobal and other calcium sources.
Good luck

thanks...the stool sample came up negative when i did a direct look and a fecal float so no parsites that i or the head vet tech saw so im pretty sure im clear their...i guess i just sit and wait and see if he gets better . i have been soaking him longer now cause he does drink water and so that is all he has had to take in lately...so i keep him soaking longer for that reason...ill try mushrooms tonight maybe a banana or strawberries just to get something in hime...

It needs humididity those are symptoms of dehydration. Is your rubbermaid opened at all times? Remember these torts come from the amazon basin and jungle where it is humid all year round 24/7/365....so you have to provide these conditions to it the same way nature does. Give them a 110 basking point and then offer them 75 degrees on the cool side of the tub with humidity in the 60-70% range.

humidity in hawaii stays at 70-80% all the time and it has water on one side and i mist twice a day so humidity is doubtful to be honest... but he is eating this morning so it seems like hes on his way to recovery...

ahhh youre in hawaii.... no worries there then.... maybe something else then. Try to give it some protein rich foods as they are omnivorous.... there is a good caresheet this tort lady has .... she gives hers pinkies and fuzzies once every 2 weeks for protein intake. Ill try to find it for you and link you to it.
