Hey guys, I had a red scat a few months back very juvenile, and one morning almost over night he developed these little white puffs on his body and died within the same day...

several months later I am retrying my tank with a green scat, and the same thing is happening, however hes acting normal and has been for the past few days. I dont think its ich, because no one else in the tank is affected, or has ever had ich.. so Im not sure waht it is.

What should I do? If it is a fungus, I can set him up in a 5.5 gallon and treat it with medicine... any advice, please let me know. It is getting progressively worse with more and more dots....

I tried to get a good pic but this is the best I could capture

He is in a 75 gallon with other brackish fish. 1sp of salt per 5 gallons (yes i know its low brackish) and water is 80degrees.

sorry to the mods for posting this in a few different forums, im just trying to reach as many ppl asap.

It could be one of two things. Scats get a type of crusty bacterial infection. It can be treated with sulfa products which are effective on external infections like these. However, if it's viral no medication can treat it. They just don't make fish vaccines. There is a saltwater viral infection called lymphosistis or "cauliflower" that looks exactly like what your fish has. I see no reason why a brackish fish couldn't catch a strain of it. It is the nastiest looking disease fish can get. The good news is unless the crust grows over his mouth (and he can't eat), his gills (and he can't breathe), or his anal pore (and he can't, well, ya know...). It will run its course in a month or two and just go away. If it turns yellow/brown its bacterial not viral. good luck.

This also happened to me.

They always died once they got this.

looks like white spot disease to me since hes in a brackish tank you should use s/water treatment for white spot treat him in a hospital tank and leave the tank fish free for 8 weeks this will rid the tank of the fungus then invest in a uv sterlizer with its own pump and you should never have any problems again..

when my scats get sick i chuck them in a bucket with an airstone bubbling away and then syphon water from a marine tank into the bucket through an airline tube so it takes ages. Then I give the scat a holiday in a marine hospital tank. Lots of veges and spirulina and live shrimp. Helps moral to have a few scats too hey. I like groups of 5.
Cool fish, need to go fishing and catch me some big ones!

Since it is a scat it could be Marine ick but since you don't mention flashing and it is not effecting the other fish and is only involving the fins a virus is more likely, lymphocystis. It is not usually fatal and can be spread to other fish through abrasions, Most articles mention that it often clears on it's own after a year or so but they also say that there is no effective cure. One article says that there is an effective treatment but that it takes time. I am attaching that link http://www.koivet.com/html/articles/articles_details.php?article_id=96
Here is a picture of a fish that is badly infected. I would have got back to you sooner but I forgot where I had seen this article.

It can last over a YEAR?? Damn... ive just been treating w/ fungus medicine the past 3 days now and it still seems the same, no worse at least...

maybe one day when my BGK passes away i can up my tanks salinity... whats a suitable level a BGK could live in?

The bits I have read say that sometimes works but sometimes they grow back even worse.
