Try treating with Prazi/Metro combination or just prazi if you can't get both together. Should clear it up.

Thanks for the reply Aquanero, I have moved the male into a smaller 10 gallon hospital tank and dosed both Prazi/Metro combo as you suggested. Just a few more questions; Should I be feeding him while being medicated? What are the symptoms of recovery? How long before I can return him into the main tank. Thanks in advance.

In a couple of days (since he's not eating at the moment) you could soak a couple of pellets in the meds for about 15 mins and try feeding it to him. Otherwise just follow the directions on the package. Once he starts eating he's on is wat to recovery. Some fish don't eat while on Metro it's common, if that's the case just finish the treatment and see what happens once he's back in the main tank.

Just an update, I have placed the bichir back into the main tank. No more signs of stringy poo and back to eating normally again. Just wanted to say thanks Aquanero for the help.

Your welcome. Good to see his doing better.
