so in the last few days i have noticed that my oscar is developing white holes on its gills...almost look like craters on its gills.

heavy breathing

been hiding under a some rocks for about 4 days now.

has NOT eaten anything.

does NOT getting excited at feeding time

tank is 125 gallon w/ fx5 1 air stone and 1 hydro v sponge filter

other fish in the tank 1 jack dempsey

Could be ick, in either case, melafix and kordon rid ich+ is usually all I need to keep oscars healthy, they both take care of a number of external problems. The JD might just be ballsy enough to have attacked the oscar and the white craters you see are just results of the fight. Melafix would heal those up pretty quickly. Sounds like possibly your oscar is intimidated by the JD, I had the same experience with a smaller red devil and a 10" tiger oscar now that I think about it. I had to move the Red Devil into another tank because the tiger oscar was acting the same way you say your oscar is.

sounds like hith to me clean water is the key so increase w/c if you feed live foods la off for a while pics??

What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings? Actual numbers are necessary.

What's your water change regimen?

What do you feed?

Have you ever tested your tank for stray current, or is the tank already grounded?

I think answering these will get us closer to determining why your Oscar is developing what sounds like HITH. Albeit, the place that this is beginning isn't typical, but the symptoms sound the same.

could very well be HITH, so I'd definitely keep up with massive water changes and keep up the high quality food, especially keeping feeders away from it

My oscar (5in) has hith too, but if my levels are perfect - ph 7.4, Ammonia 0 nitrate 0, do i still need to do more water changes? I do one 30-40 percent wc a week. I am about to treat it with Metronidazole. I feed homemade fish food (blended fish, carrots, multi vitamin and spinich) in the AM and Hikari gold in the pm. What else can I do? I can't take it anymore!!!!

Yeah He has HITH.. My Oscar was the same way.. Give him some Meds I forgot the kind I had but it was in a small tube and was in the form of salt (started with M) Mix it with his food (Pellets) or Whatever you feed him but keep him away from feeders..

It's important to find out what's causing it and fix that or the treatment won't work. Don't medicate unless you're providing your fish every chance to heal!
