The first pic is when I first got him, the second is now. I think his colors came out more because of more protein, what say MFK?

Hard to say. My male only displays bars when gaurding a spawn or he's about to attack. Lol

Clean water and comfort with the surroundings usually colors up most of my fish though.

Also as they grow they'll start showing more color. I always say water changes are the key to happy fish
