I got to thinking, and would two pairs in two side by side tanks help strengthin the bonds between the pairs? My reason for thinking this is that the males will probably spend most of their time fighting the other male in the tank right on side of it, lessoning the time spent hassling the female. Is this genious... or just plain stupid? Also, what species forms stronger bonds, Labiatus, Citrinellum, PetSmart mutt?

The difference between the two fish would be small if even noticeable. That is an interesting theory you have but keep in mind that constant fighting especially a fight that has no clear winner can cause stress and eventually disease in your fish. It would probably depend on the individual pair which method would work better. For males that are highly aggressive to their mates it might be worth a try.

I'm not sure what would happen, but I think you may be on to something. I have had male and female fish display to eachother from neigboring tanks.

Do you think it would be worth a shot? I'd most likely try it with midas or red devils, and motas or jags. Even if they are side by side I'll definately be using the partial divider but was thinking of creating a "cage" like i've seen before so it isn't to obvious.

Constantly ramming the glass and biting at a fish can cause stress on the fish just like a fish that doesn't have a big enough territory in the tank can stress it self chasing all the others. It can be just as bad for the aggressor as the recipient. That being said the fish you are talking about are very hardy specimens and very aggressive with their mates sometimes, I would think the benefits would out weigh the risk in those fish.

Let me know how it turns out

I think it is a good idea. The pair bonds should get stronger. Just make sure you have lids on those tanks. I once kept a male White Hericthys labridens in a tank next to a male Red Devil. One day I came home to find the labridens dead in the Red Devil's tank. He jumped in to get him, but he didn't make out to good after he did it.
