I felt compelled to correct them. Some newbie might try and adopt this fish for their seventy five gal.

Them:
We have a very large Pacu Fish that needs a new home ASAP. He is approximatley 13 or 14 inches long and is just getting too big for out 55 gallon tank. He would need a home of atleast 75 gallons. Please contact me if you are interested! Asking $20, just so we can relpace him with a couple smaller fish.

Me:

Ok I know this is not a discussion board. I feel compelled to offer some corrections on this post to protect someone who might be misinformed.

13-14 inches is not a very large pacu..It's still a baby pacu.
A seventy five gal is far from from large enough even as a grow out tank for a baby pacu. Better start thinking about where to put a two hundred gal or a small indoors pond.

You'll be hard pressed to find someone to take this fish even for free, the market is flooded with pacus who need homes and not enough homes to take them.
I hope you can find a home for your pacu and I hope this discourages people from buying them in the first place.

At least you tried to make a difference. And maybe you just saved one from a short miserable existence.

I'm sorry to say, its not the fault of the aquarist in buying these fish, its the retailers. They shouldn't stock them in the first place. A small Pacu of say, 40mm is a very attractive fish and if people see them they will buy them.

Its the fault of the aquarist AND retailer.
The aquarist for not researching the fish and giving them a tiny home.
The retailer for stocking these fish, and perhaps not giving the right advice.

:iagree:

poor pacus-- i love those fish, and its sad to see them get so mistreated due to ignorance..

i agree...pacu shouldnt be stocked in stores... if someone REALLY wants one i think you should have to order one specially and maybe if a person has to go through a hoop to get one they might actually have put time and research in to them....i have a red belly who i have always wanted....finally got her 2 yrs ago... expensive to keep due to homing her.. but a pleasure all the same~!!!

Very much agree, I do wonder how much the retailer actually knows about the fish they sell, or if they look at it simply as a game of numbers, we may be giving the retailer too much credit for knowledge they don't even have. The stupid sign on the pacu tank says min gallon 75 and 14 inch max growth from what I remember. Then again marketing wins...
