I had sand with silica in it... Super cloudy for a day or two, it was white and got dirty looking very fast. I didn't have a canister though.
I have a 100lbs of silica (sandblasting) and 100lbs of pool filter sand mixed together. I haven't had a problem yet with my 2 fx5's and a wet dry.
It's a 180 and I wanted to have a clean look so I drilled holes and plumbed the fx5's through the glass. The intakes are 14" up from the bottom.

Wow. Do you have details somewhere on your drilling and plumbing process? I love the jacuzzi jet look.
