is white silica sand ok to use? or what about black beauty? how many pounds will i need for 125g at about a 2" depth?

I put 100lbs of Quickrete general purpose and 50lbs of play sand in my 125.
Filled it to the level of the plastic trim ~1.5 - 2.0 inches.
silica is fine as alot of sand is silica (melted sand = glass)
Hope you like a bright tank as the white sand with make it that way. :) :)
Black Beauty on the other hand will have the opposite effect on the brightness.

Generally speaking the fish prefer darker substrate because they feel they are not as exposed to preditors when next to it. In lighter substrate some fish can get stressed and loose a lot of their colour.

IMO yes, the brighter the substrate, the more washed out the fish appear. My preference is a light brown to black substrate.
Seems to make the fish and decor more of the focal point than the stark white. The fish also seem to be more comfortable with a more natural dark substrate (unless you are talking marine/reef).

General purpose sand is dirty as far as cleaning.
Play sand around here is cleaner, but brighter.
Pool filter sand here may as well be white when underwater/lights.
My fist go with sand was PFS. Dumped it right in the tank with no rinsing it was that clean. WAY to bright for me and my fish (but wouild have been great for a reef tank).
My second was what I have now. 150 quickrete general mixed with with 50 play. Not much brighter than standard gravel, and looks great I think.

If you have substrate sifters like eartheaters for example, be careful with Black Beauty. It's actually coal slag and I've heard it has very sharp edges.

is black beauty a sand you get from homedepot or something?
Nope. As far as I know, LFS only.

I use white pool filter/silca sand and the fish are not all washed out. but I do have a lot of driftwood and other hiding/visual breaks.
