hey all, im in the process on glueing a refugium myself and i came across few threads i have read here that we should only use GE I silicon and NOT GE II.. i also heard that my fish buddies told me that if we use aquarium standard silicon it's much harder then commercial grade silicon.. anyone have any incites about this?? also if i were to use GE I silicon i was thinking of getting BLACK color, would you know where to find black color silicon??

I only use GE SCS 1200 silicone. It is much stronger then the silicone 1 found at a hardware store. It might just work fine for you because of your small project, but anything larger, use the good stuff.

GE II has mold inhibitor which is harmful to fish. I found a quote in another thread: "SCS1200 has a tensile strength of 470 psi, and adhesion of 40 psi. Momentive RTV108 tensile strength of 400 psi, and adhesion of 40 psi."

Both appear to be food grade (so not harmful) and as Z Trip said above he has used SCS 1200, so there you go. It's safe and strong.

Here is a LOT more information than you asked for, but what the heck, right? ;)

If cost is not an issue go with the aquarium silicone. It's much stronger than the GEI and won't mold. I've used GE I and developed black mold inside. So if you use black you may get mold and won't even know it.

i'm just installing a small tank.. glass had been cut and it's only 24 x 9 x 10H" so it's very small.. i want to try to DIY on this little refugium. so was wondering what type of silicon and i want to try Black color silicon since it's by the window silt.. i don't know where can i purchase BLACK aquarium silicon.. anyone have any recommendations?

Ace hardware carries black silicone aswell as online stores
