Silicone Lubricant

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
probably not. i use k-y personal lube. its water soluble, its is safe, works great, and has some other helpfull uses

I wouldnt do it. The silicone maybe but the teflon, no. You dont know what else is in the composition.

If you absolutley have to lubricate o-rings and such, a very LIGHT coat of petroleum jelly would work. Food grade silicone would be my next choice, especially if it has to be under some type of stress. Again, a very light coat.

What is the application?

not to star a war but.... petroleum jelly is made out of petroleum correct? then that probably wouldnt be quiet as safe eh? ithink a water based lube would be much more appropriate

No, you're cool. That is what this forum is about.

The only thing about the personal lubricant is that it is water soluble and it does wash off. It's mostly solidified glycerin.

Some aquarium products I have gotten do come with a little package of rubber lubricant and for the most I can tell it was silicone.

As far as the petroleum jelly goes, I've used it for years on o-rings in water applications. Usually I wipe the o-ring with the PJ and then wipe it mostly back off. It's waterproof.
Just my 2 cents

No. Most common rubber o-rings are what is know as Buna-N rubber. It's basically a natural rubber that holds up well to industrial situations. There are plenty of variations but Buna-N is the most common and therefore the cheapest.

Condoms are mostly latex rubber and dont hold up to petroleum anything. Try using latex gloves with something simple as mineral spirits (common paint thinner). They dissolve in a few minutes.

I f you dont feel safe using PJ then maybe try Crisco. The problem with that is I dont know if it will rancid over time. Again, rub it on the o-ring and wipe most of it off. You just want barely a film on it.

Considering there are direct contact fish medications that are PJ based I'd think it would be pretty safe, it's also used orally in cats to help prevent hairballs.

I believe Pentair makes silicone o-ring lubricant for aquarium use.
