I recently bought a nice 125 gal tank, stand and acryllic sump off of craigs. The project is coming along. Almost done refurbishing the stand. How ever Im now in the process of converting the sump into a Wet/Dry. I went and bought Sillicone II from Lowes and like an idiot I read the fine print after putting in my first partition. In very small font it reads "Not for aquarium use". Wonderful....... So I have a two part question.

1) If I remove all the silicone from the sump will it be safe?

and

2) Can some one give me a product name that works well on joining acrylic and sealing it as well.

for joining acrylic use weld-on 3, 4, 16(gel), or 40.
Weld-on 3 and 4 sets up faster than the 16 but I find the 16 easier to use and it seems to give better coverage. With 3 and 4 you might have to reseal if it dont suck up in between the two pieces of acrylic that well. I have never used 40 but hear that it has a longer working time ans when it sets up it sets up stronger than the others.

As far as cleaning off the old silicone I dont know, I would think if you got it all off and clean it real good it should be fine.

By the way you can't use silicone to seal acrylic together it dont hold all that well. You can find the weld-on products online or at your local acrylic shop.

not for aquarium use may or may not be a fish safety issue. it could be a liability issue. if its pure silicone its safe....if it has mold or mildew inhibitors its not safe.....

having said all that dont use silicone to join acrylic.... use Weldon solvent cement.

It has mold and mildew inhibitors =( I hope I can get it clean enough.

just scrape it really well.....i think it will be fine.....since it doesnt stick that well i expect it to come off well.......

Ive removed majority of it already, I need to do a better job tomorrow when I have more light. I think a paint scrapper and a scrub pad with hot water and soap should do the trick.

weldon #4 is like silicone for acrylic
????

the weldon glues are solvent based and actually chemically melt the plastic to form a bond

silicone is an adhesive which much adhere to the surface in order to work.....
