Does anyone know what silicone's are aquarium safe? Also, has anyone ever purchased "lava" rocks from home depot? and are they usable in aquariums?

thanks in advance for your help!

Hello; I believe that you want silicone I that does not have any additives. GE silicone I has been suggested by many. silicone II and others may have mold or other inhibitors added. Some brands will be labeled for use in aquariums but will likely be more expensive, especially at a fish shop. If you do a search on this forum there will be many posts on the subject including the names of products that memberss have used.

GE silicone I is fish safe. As far as lava rocks go, they can be used. Be careful with the lava rocks and fish. Some of the lava rocks are sharp.

What about GE silicone 2?? I can not find GE silicone 1 in black.

Hello:it is my understanding that silicones labeled as II have undesireable additives. So use clear silicone I or keep looking for the black silicone I sounds like good advice .

GE I. Good stuff.
Rinse the lava rock and put it in your tank/sump whatever. It is an inert rock that wont change water chemistry and some people have used it with good success as media for BB. The bigger pieces can be stacked to make bridges and such in the tank and it looks nice. Just be aware that lava rock can be very sharp and some times it will "shed" debris like sand.
