So I’m in the process of making my sump, and it has been hell since I suck at patience. I stupidly bought possibly the wrong silicone because I bought GE Silicone 1 Tubs and Tiles. The red tube. I didn’t realize I bought the wrong one till after I finished making the sump and baffles. So now here’s the thing. I’ve read over 100 threads some predating 2005. And what I came to understand is the the tubs and tiles have Mold Resistance thingy. Many many many people say if I allowed it to cure properly it shouldn’t be an issue due to the fact that every single one of GE product carries some type of Mildewcide or Mold Resistance. So now my question is..., is it safe? Many people have used this very same silicone and seemed fine.

I personally would redo with the GE pure silicone and not take the risk of losing fish later from poisoning.

It says 100% Silicone

I couldnt answer. Ive only used the all purpose silicone (blue)

Too late to not have patience. Id probably redo it. OR You can test it out as is by running it with some cheap fish and some established bio

Have you tried calling or emailing the manufacturer? They probably have info on potential leaching, or at the very least can say whether it "might" be safe.

Personally, I would redo. Which sucks...

It says 100% silicone on the bottle. I'd feel safe to use it, just make sure to give it at least 24 hours to fully cure

From what I can tell, "100%" silicone is to distinguish it from other products:
WHY 100 PERCENT SILICONE?
Unlike most non-silicone caulks (water-based, acrylic, siliconized acrylic and latex), 100% silicone is permanently:
  • Waterproof—non-silicones can break down in water over time.
  • Flexible—non-silicones can become less flexible and can even freeze at low temperatures, making them more likely to crack.
  • Shrink-proof—non-silicones can shrink as the caulk dries, which can cause cracks over time.
  • Crack-proof—non-silicones can harden, crack and crumble over time when exposed to extreme heat and the sun's UV rays.

It doesn't mean it contains silicone and nothing else.

It also claims 10 years of mold resistance. Other sites mention this is accomplished with a biocide. It makes sense that the mold resistance would last longer than curing time. After all, mold build-up happens over years not in the 30 minute curing period.

Definitely redo.

But then how do you know what silicone has no fungicides or anti-mold?
