I would prefer to get silicone only on the bottom of my tank. Is it ok to silicone a DIY sytrofoam background to only the bottom of the tank and not the sides? or will there be too much buoyancy and the background will break free and float up.

Doubhtful it will work only adhering it to the bottom. It may work for a short period of time but if your going through all the trouble of a diy background y not just make it last...i would atleast seal the sides aswell as the bottom. If space is not an issue behind the bckgrnd then id just go ahead and seal the whole thing. Are you worried about removing it in the future?

ya, I am partly thinking that if I want it removed in the future then silicon residue on the bottom wont matter because I will have substrate. And second, it is an enclosing background so it covers back glass and both side glass, only front is exposed. So if the tank is ever viewed from the sides then silicone adhering the sides to the glass will be easily visible and doesn't look so good. But id rather have that then the background float up on me.
