Siliconing net to 2" overflow pipe opening?

Hey guys will it be safe for me to silicon a part of net to the overflow pipe? I'm going to buy an Asian aro soon, and upon checking him in the LFS, it's only about an inch wide while the pipe is 2" in diameter so I'm having worries about it.

Get some of that plastic mesh for ponds and wedge it in.
