I'm still pretty new to the hobby, only been here for a serious 7 months now, but I'm kinda perplexed. I tested my ammonia 4 hours ago, and it was around 1.5ppm. I let it be, tested it an hour later, and it was still 1.5, maybe closer to 1. I tested it just a few minutes ago, and it's now at a perfect yellow 0. I have no nitrites, and the same level of 20 nitrates. Is this normal? I'm a bit confused lol, I'm not sure if it's the test kit or what.

Probably the test kit. Did you do a water change or anything before you measured the water?
No, last water change was 10% 3 days ago just to remove debris, 20-30% a few days before that. It's just weird that the results seemed consistent, and I checked again and my levels are still the same.

Hello; First thing I usually suggest I to clean the vials. For this I recommend distilled water (DW). Some others favor de-ionized water (DI) but DW is so much easier to come by. Bothe for a rinse of the vials and also to fill and let them soak a while. The idea is the DW or DI will pick up any left over contaminants.

Another thought is the beneficial bacteria (bb) are doing their job. Say you happened to get some water when there was a some ammonia in the water for some reason. The bb over time will convert the ammonia to nitrite and then to the less toxic nitrate.

Could be the vial still had some regent left on it. Rinse out vials with deionized or distilled water after testing.

I do rinse my vials, no worries there! I use DI water because it makes me feel a bit better even if it's a pain to find. I can't get any ammonia reading whatsoever now so I'm not gonna worry too much, but I'd expect there to be a rise in my nitrates if it was the cycle, no? I have two small pothos plants but they aren't recieving light at this time so I highly doubt they took care of things that quick. I've never had a cycle fail on me yet which was my first concern, but I guess it was just a false alarm.

Is this tank planted with anything other than pothos??? Also how heavy is the stocking???

Im guessing with a low enough bio-load, the pothos could be doing a bit even if not receiving much light...

The tank is a 40B with three young bichirs, each under 5in. So with daily feeding, the load definitely isn't the lightest. The pothos is the only plant there since it's just a growout tank. Thought I'd add that this tank completed its cycle about 3 months ago, the media I used was 5 months old.

Last 2 possibilities i can think of;

1) is there any chance the test kit has gone past its use by date causing false results???

2) did you not shake the bottles well enough before conducting the test???

The test definitely isn't past the use by date, but I do occasionally get false readings or readings that don't make sense, so I'm definitely considering switching brands to see if something suits me better. I've made it a habit to shake the bottles so I don't believe that was the case, but with the readings I got anything is possible. Everything seems totally normal now in all 4 of my tanks, still not sure how I got such a wacky reading. Thanks for the thoughts and opinions guys, I'll eventually get the hang of everything.
