could I put a jag with a silver aro in a 180?

it may or may not work, most likely it should be fine. rally has done it.

i had a foot long aro with a 7" synspillum last time... i think the cichlid was a bully and ended up beating on the aro.
if the aro was a monster in comparison it might have been a different story. i'd rather be cautious and say no for now. you dont want to have the aro launching itself when it gets bullied.

Totaly depends on the temprament of the jag. i have seen 2" jag do major damage to to other cichlids so be careful.
if the arrowana was much bigger than the jag it may work.
You will need a bigger tank eventually to ensure relative harmony between the fish and space for the arrowana.

also if the jag is too small its gonna be dinner very quickly.
my old arrowana grew at 1 - 2" a month for the first 9 months then slowed to .5 - 1" after that but increased in bulk as well.

good choices for arrowana tankmates are:

ones ive tried

girraffe cats
barbs (tinfoil, lemon, spanner)
silver sharks
severum
Earth eaters.
tilapia. (not buttiferki)
clown knife (in a tropical pond)
Red tailed cat (in a tropical pond)

You will have to upgrade to a 300 and beyond once the aro gets 24"+. Or perhaps a 240 with a smaller height, wider footprint.

Dats are great tank mates for aros. A Jag might work, but it'll probably be a bit too aggressive for the aro. However, it could go the other way as well, in terms of the dominant fish.
