Do you think having a background on a fish tank helps keep the fish calm?

My silver is going completely crazy, I have to walk slowly towards the tank otherwise it freaks out and tries to jump out. I have no idea why.

I do think a dark background helps some. Als otry adding some floating plants this will help it feel more secure. What size tank is it in? I have found, the deeper the tank(front to back)the calmer the aro.

Other things to consider is having the tank up higher in a low traffic area. Also keeping bright colors(red, oranges and yellows0 away from the tank

Its in a 300g, it was fine for at least 6 months then suddenly when crazy. I had a black background on the tank for a few weeks but took it off. I am going to put it back on as soon as I can and see if it helps.

The aro now sits in the bottom corner of the tank, swims around for a couple of minutes and goes right back. It also has not eaten for a few weeks.

urs aro didn't eat anything for a few weeks? wow man, how long actually the life span of aro without eating anything at all

when I re-installed the laminated background on my 125gal (covering the back and sides of the tank) my silver aro calmed down A LOT. He rarely ever jumps now when you approach the tank. I recommend it if your aro is sensitive, might just save his life from a fatal concussion.

How long aro's can go without eating depends on size. A 12" aro should be able to manage 2 months without any severe side effects.

Its 26" long, I am thinking its to stressed out to eat. I will add a background asap. So far it has knocked off a few scales and has a patch on top of its mouth where its rubbed the skin off.

The sides are already black its just the back I need to do.

The picture is before I took the background off.

The background has been on for a couple of days now and the aro has really calmed down. Started eating for the first time in weeks today.
