Hey guys trying to do the right thing here before i go out and just buy fish. Im thinking about geting a baby clown knife and a baby silver aro and putting them in a 72 gallon GROW OUT tank that's 18'' wide just wondering how long i can keep those two fish in there before i upgrade now keep in mind i dont plan on "power" growing these fish they will be fed a good balanced diet every few days. Now my next question is what is the min tank i need to purchase for these two fish to live togther in comfortably long term. thanks ahead of time for the response

In my experience, clowns and aros will sometimes fight. They have similar body shapes, colors, and aggression cues and techniques, so it could cause trouble, especially since baby arowanas are fragile. What size aro are you getting? When they're young they can grow a couple of inches a month. I would upgrade when the arowana hits a foot, since the tank is 18" wide.

Baby fish shouldn't be fed every few days, you do that until their fast growing stops, at around 2'. Feed every day, even twice a day, in moderate amounts.

Once the arowana is about a foot you could try introducing the clown knife, although it's a hit or miss. Just add plenty of hides for the clown. Final tank size, something with a minimum footprint of 8x4, assuming the aro and clown get along. I'd aim for 10x4, maybe even a width of 5' if you've got the room.

thats very sound advice to me and thats what im dong and u lucky to have 72G grow out right-away so u can keep it in tank that longer than mine :P

My intention was to buy a clown knife @ 4" and the aro @ around 7" but now im thinking i got some false info cuz i was told by the idiots at the LFS that it would be a year and a half to two years before the aro out grew the tank. Id much rather get a jardini b/c they dont get as big and wouldnt need as big of a tank in the long run do you guys think i could pull that off or do you think the jardini would kill the clown once he got to his "mean" streak as i said before the 72 is only temporary and i have the funds right now to buy the bigger tank i just wanna get them past the easy to die stage before i spend a small fortune

I didn't get my clown till he was about 14"
but he wanted to nuzzle my silver constantly
never aggressive but it sure pissed the silver off

hmm reminds me of me and the wife ..

Aros and clowns can be a bad combo i got my ck when he was only about 2- 2 1/2 inches and now hes at almost 3 1/2 my silver i got at 6 1/2 and as soon as i dropped in the aro the ck was all over her until the aro stood u for herself now they co-exist pretty nicely but yes its def a hit r miss with these two species best of luck :D

Some jardinis accept tank mates, but the majority will kill all tankmates.

Small arowanas aren't THAT fragile. As long as you don't have any rambunctious tank mates, or poor water quality, they do fine. Just don't get them so young that they still have the egg yolk attached.

well, i'll agree that 72 gallons isn't even an appropriate grow out tank for a silver arowana. the thing about the CK and the aro i don't get. my 16"+ CK has lived with 3 different arowana and we have had NO aggression issues.

he moved in with my Pinky (24"+) when i first got him, never had a problem except i didn't see him much for the first couple months, spent more time hiding than swimming.

now he lives with my 2 wild caught brat silver aros (22"+) and while the brats fuss with each other now and then, the CK doesn't get into it with anyone ever. he just swims where he wants and comes to eat when the food comes out. maybe i just got lucky?

Nope, it's just me that got unlucky. I had the clown swim up to all the aros and try to fight them, mouth to tail, like most aros and most knives fight.

well just a qucik update i ordered a 5" jar yesterday and i cant wait for it to come it ! it cost me $80 so im hoping everything gos smooth but something always goes wrong so if i have any questions ill post here. Also i boght the clown knife yesterday it is only abdout 2 1/2 " so im not too worried about agrresion issues yet but we will see what time brings
