I've noticed that all of a sudden my 18" silver aro stopped eating all of a sudden. I've had him for about 7 months now and he had a voracious appetite before this. I feed him large shrimp, blood worms, and the occassional large cichlid pellets (which are meant for the cichlids in the tank but he sometimes gulps them up). It's been about 5 days since he hasn't eaten anything. I've been doing everything the same back when he was still eating just fine (water changes, filter media replacement, etc...). He's in a 300g and all of the other fish in the tank are still eating like they always have been.

Does anyone have any ideas for him to start eating again?

Were you feeding him peeled shrimp? Tail on or off?

everything is peeled off from the shrimp before feeding (including the tail)

Silver aros are known to do this. I have found that offering no food for a few days can usually get them to eat a little. Once you do get him eating again on a regular basis, it is a good idea to not feed once or twice a week.

is this true for aro's who aren't even 24" long yet, cuz at 18" he's still really young.

yea it doesnt matter he can still get weird eating habbits, my black does it about once a month, he will eat everyday for about a month then all of a sudden he wont eat for 3-4 days but its ok they might go anywhere up to 2 weeks without eating a thing, just give him time and be patient

Yes, at this size by fasting you can keep them more aggressive towards eating. This is especially true if you feed until full everyday. No set formula, you just need to experiment a little.

You have more then one black aro? From your posts it looks as if you've only had your black a little over three weeks. Too little time to have established an eating pattern.

arows can go on hunger strikes for weeks thats what i heard maybe its stressed

I thank you all for the advice and I'll post when he decides to eat again!

Yay! My aro started to finally eat again. I might start to feed him every other day now. Thanks everyone
