I'm thinking about getting myself a silver aro for my bday but i want to make sure it's the right fish for me.
I have a 175 72"Lx20"Wx30"T with the following fish:
6 blood parrots 2-6"
1 L/F tiger oscar 6"
1 O.niger 7"
1 spotted bullhead 3"
1 TSN 6" (soon to be gone)
1 4line pictus 3"
1 albino common pleco 4"
2 clown loaches 2" (want 10 more)
1 senegal bichir 6"

The silver aro in question will be 3"

I can think of a few fish on that list that could harass, if not eat an arowana at that size. Also the tank is not wide enough to sustain a full grown silver. Needs to be at least 36" wide. But until it reaches 20" or so, you should be ok.

i agree sum fish like pleco, catfish,TSN will eat silver

Baby silvers should be kept by themselves upto 5 or 6 inches and with very select tankmates until 10".

Within 18 to 24 motns the arowana will be 24" and too large for your 175g. Would you be planning an upgrade?

i guess no aro for me. I like my catfish more. I won't be upgrading soon, maybe never. I don't really have to worry about getting fish too big for my tank if im select about which monsters i get. Memphis is not the best place to find monsters so there are usually a few handfuls of people ready to take monsters off my hands. I do a big fish rescue on my off time and i usually dont keep any large fish too long. There are a few people with 300-500g tanks with already big monsters who are waiting to find newer big fish to go with them. I already have a taker for my TSN one it gets bigger and i have a lady who would have taken my aro because one of hers jumped and she cant find another one big enough to replace it. Anyhow, i'd rather keep my cats than get an aro so maybe somewhere down the road i'll have another tank for one. thanks for the recomendations folks

Doesnt look like the dimensions fit the picture. I would think 72 x 20 x 30" would be a lot taller than that tank.

thats a very nice tank but for silvers id recommend a bare minimum of 24'' width(larger the better...3 ft wide is actually the bare min. but 24'' if your house cant accomodate the size of tank)
thatd be a nice growout till it hits the 9'' mark but it'll need an upgraded tank otherwise its very likely that its lifespan will decrease

edit: btw one of my very first aro was a silver...grew it from 3'' to about 18'' in a 55g..gave it to a friend for free because i couldnt house it properly at the time and he only placed it in a 75g..only 6'' wider...5 yrs later it died. so it only lived about 6 yrs....so in your tank id assume itll live at most 10 yrs? but im sure u would want it to live much longer
