I work for a lfs and we recently had a 2.5 ft silver arowana brought in by a customer. He said it was eating dinner shrimp every other week. I fed it some krill and squid day two and that was the last time it accepted food. It's been a month. Nitrates stay low, tankmates are community. He is in a 200gal tank with plenty of room. I have gone so far as to try forcing dinner shrimp in his mouth with a feeding prong. He is starting to look thin and I just don't know what to do about.

I am not an expert, but I don't think any fish will starve itself to death.

I think he is just stressed from the move into a new environment with new tank-mates.

Unless you see symptoms of any other illness, I don't think loss of appetite itself is too much to worry about especially in an Aro that size.

If you want to play it safe, consider moving the Silver Aro to a tank without any tankmates.

Just my 2 cents. Let's see what the experts have to say.

Good luck,
Sid

PS: Pics of a 2.5 inch Silver Aro will always be a delight to see :)

It will be fine arowana are known to fast for long periods of time. Don't try to force feed it. The fish is stressed from the new environment most likely. It may go another month without eating. The only thing to do is keep introducing small amounts of food every other day. Eventually the aro will start eating like a pig again

Ok thanks for the info everyone! Hopefully he will be alright.

it'll be fine. it's in a new environment so let him be

I'm by no means an Aro expert, being a fairly new owner, but my little fella seemed pretty stressed and wasn't eating well until I reduced the stock in the tank. Once he had more room he settled right down and started eating constantly.

Try giving it some shrimp again. If he doesn't take it don't worry, he's probably still adjusting. The fact that he ate the day after you got him is just a strange coincidence. I've read an aro that size can go for about 4 months without eating...
