Hi all
i am a hardcore aro fan, i have a read, RTG and a jardinii.
in the future i wnt to collect the whole set....
thinking of black aros and Silver aros

first of all

Black aros - They dont get as big and thick as silvers?

silver aros - i have seen many pictures of silver aros, and i have seen some that people have owned here in my country... the big ones, im talking 20 inch above always have ugly colour. the body is more pearly white thna shiny silver... the tail becomes same colour as the body - doesnt have that pinkish tinge anymore..

so, my dillema...... is this a diet and care thing, most of these people use beef heart.....

CAN I PLEASE HAVE pics of adult silvers, 20inch plus.
reason is that i want to see examples out there of nice silvers. silvers with fat thick bodies, nice scale colouration and still rather long fins if its possible. also if you could put your diet regimen in the comments once photo is posted.

any ideas also what you can do to ensure that the colour is a shiny silver. here is an example pic i seen on the net, fantastic adult 24 inch silver. i am looking to see if anyone else has achieved this....thanks

is it possible to actually have an arowana with pinkish taikl and a very silver body when its older or do they all fade to a pearly dull whitish colour?

Hi.

I'm pretty sure that second link is Boggy's old silver. You might want to give him a buzz.

Silver arowanas can keep their colour, but it's got to do with diet. Arapaimas in the wild get their red from eating crabs rich in carotene. You should be feeding your silver arowana a diet rich in that to give it 'redder' fins and a nice red sheen over the body.

Black arowanas are shorter and a little thinner than silvers.

Beef heart aint a bad option, but they ain't gonna find beef heart in the wild are they? In my opinion, and others will disagree, it's best to give prized fish a diet similar to what they would eat in the wild. That would be insects, small aquatic animals, and fish or shrimps for bigger arowanas. Also pellets would b good so they aren't fed to richly for their whole life. You would exactly want a cupckae for lunch everyday of your life would you lol.

Eric.

Haven't seen an adult silver aro with a color pail tail when it reaches 20"+. Mine is already at 18 or 18 1/2" still it has it's reddish tails, but I think to maintain those reddish colors needs to have good care and some good lightning. Though I don't use the lights anymore since fishes need some rest too.

Might have to show you my 18" sorry if the pix were bad :D

Here's my soon to be monster silver:

Looks as if you will be getting many useless juvi pics such as the ones above. At least sonistars are close to what you asked for.

Mature silvers all pretty much look as you've described, lots of intense light will give a more silvery look. As for coloration, still have yet to see a 24" plus silver with a predominate amount of pink in the tail/fins. The "nice" silver pics you linked looks to be about 18 to 20".

Below are pics of the same aros, note the difference in look. This is due to different lighting conditions. The aros are both 24 plus inches. Have been raised on shrimp, krill and misc food sticks and pellets.

Also regarding lighting, the Hagen brand "powerglo" lamps will bring out the pink in silver aros. The Coralife "colormax" will also have is effect, just not as intense. If you look at the two pics below you can see this effect. The powerglo lamps are the standard light on my tank, other light has been added for pics.

This pic the camera flash washes out most other ligthing, but you can still see the pink on the fin from the powerglo.

This pic, if you look in the shadow, you can see the area of the arowana that is only lit by the powerglo lamp. Again note the pink.

very beautiful and coloration depends on diet, blacks dont get as thick
