I plan on getting a Silver Arowana thats probably 8-10 inches long for my 40 gallon tank. He will be the only fish in there

Honestly, how long before I absolutly must move him to a bigger tank?

And is $60 dollars a fair price for a Normal or Red tailed Silver Arowana that is 8-10 inches?

Thanks

6 months tops.
You're doing things backward, get the tank you need to keep an adult first with the right filtration so you can cycle it.
The right lights etc etc.
buying a fish that'll grow big before you buy the tank for it to live in is the wrong way to go, you'll always be playing catch up with requiered equipment.
Maybe one month you won't be able to afford something you need and you'll put it off, ergo you're putting the fish at risk. Getting a set up you need will cost you a lot of money, that might be money you don't have in the future.
The fish should be the last thing you buy, once it's in the tank it should never come out.

The arowana will outgrow the 40g tank quicker than you will be able to cycle a larger tank to move him to.

In 6 months that aro will be anywhere between 14 and 18" .

Yea...silver in a 40 gallon, would need to be swap in about couple months. You really should go with a bigger tank so that the fish can grow freely without abnormal defect while u grow it in the 40 gal.

So unless you've already got a bigger tank running, that aro has essentially already out-grown your 40g....
:(

Ive kept an oscar, silver arowada, and jack chichild before in a 55 gallon happlily for years I believe

I can't believe I need a 100+ gallon tank for just 1 fish.....

You mean silver arowana in a 55G tank????:WTF:

You asked for and honest answer and that's what everyone gave you. If you've kept a silver arowana before then you should already know that when young, they grow about 1.5 inches per month and that as adults, they are potential 3 footers. If you don't plan on upgrading anytime soon, I would hold off on getting it. The less space you give it to grow in while young, the higher the chance of it injuring itself. In smaller spaces they will feel cornered easily and will be more jumpy than their normal skittish selves. So unlike most other fish, when they run out of room, instead of swimming quietly in a small circle, they jump a lot more and will possibly injure its spine or escape the tank to its death. Then not only will another poor aro suffer a premature death, but you will be down 60 bucks.

We're just trying to help you avoid making a mistake that a lot of others have made. We've given you the info, what you choose to do with it is up to you. Think hard and plan now, instead of worrying later. Just my 2 cents.
