silver arowana lost eye

hello i have had a 4" silver arowana in 4ft tank with a 5" gar,clown knife,fire eel,pim pictus cat,feather whisker cat and gibiceps now for about 3months only to find this morning my much loved arowana has had its eye taken out along with one of its whiskers. im suspecting the gar but not sure and also will the whisker grow back?

Id point fingers at the gar too just because they are pretty mean, But with the barbell it might it might not depending on if it was torn all the way out. When i bought my aro from someone he said the aro was getting bullied and he lost his barbells but they wont grow back cause they were ripped all they way out.

Hence why we say aros under 6" should have no tankmates.

Gar don't seem all that aggressive to me, have you seen them pick at each other? Another strong possibility IMO your aro has smashed into your hood when it was spooked, or ran into your decor. I can see how a gar surfacing can spook an aro, but not gar attacking something that it knows cant fit in its mouth. Like I said IMO best of luck on the recovery.

Most any of those tankmates could be the culprit. There are even two cases here on MFK of small aro being killed by pictus cats. This is why it is recommended that arowana be grown out by themselves until 6" and even then only a very select few tank mates until 10-11".

Very important to research before buying, mixing, and keeping fish.

thanks for the input, he is now in a tank with two baby peacock bass and has started eating again after a day out and is adapting well with one eye. can anyone else tell me if the missing barbel will grow back?? i am so annoyed with myself that he has been disfigured, definately more research needed in future. he is my pride and joy and want him to be back to as near normal as poss.
