I read they need to be in brackish water, but is this true? will they be healthy and just as happy in freshwater? i also read they are more aggressive than indos...how much more aggressive are they? thanks

Silvers are very aggressive eaters. They will always eat first. Other than that they do push other dats around but they dont do much damage. They are supposed to be a brackish fish but many MFK'ers keep them in full fresh. My 11"er has been in fresh its whole life and does great.

Same experience here.:D

My ATs definitely run my tanks...even boss my NGTs around...but it's never anything I worry about. I do make sure to feed them first, because if any of my other guys get food before him (especially my NTTs), he snaps...and then it can get a little ugly.

My ATs have been in fresh their whole lives as well...and they have thrived.

So on the hostility factor can someone make a list of what is highest to lowest?

Here's what I've found to be the pecking order:

NGT - New Guinea Dat
AT - Silver Dat
ST - Widebar Dat
IT - Indo Dat
NTT - Thinbar Dat

I have a questions, as I have never kept NGT's or AT's. From what I understand NGT's, for the most part, are only aggressive with other NGT's. While the AT can be aggresive toward all other Dats, especially during feeding time.

Why is the NGT considered more aggresive, if this is indeed tru?

IMO, the main reason is that ATs don't hit with anywhere near the tenacity of an NGT. If you have two NGTs in a tank, you're pretty much in for some trouble. This isn't always true with ATs...I have a tank with 3 ATs and they are fine.

ATs will show the majority of their aggression during feeding times. They basically scare others away so they can eat. Even my small NGTs will WAIL on anything that gets near their hidespot...regardless of size.
