I have 2 Oscar's in a 155 gallon tank, recently my wife was given a 34 gallon tank with a bunch of fish in it not too many but one was a 4 (ish) inch silver dollar that would freak out at any sort of movement and crash into the glass. So we decided to put him in with the Oscars and all seems well hes calmed down a lot but I know they are schooling fish and I'd like to get 4 more. So what type of silver dollar is he and will he school with smaller ones?

FYI Oscar's are about 6-7 inches in length

Common silver dollar (Metynnis argenteus) that you find at Petsmart or Petco, sometimes alongside the spotted ones which stay smaller. It might school with the smaller M. argenteus, however, they are best in a group of 8 or more, and exhibit behavior dramatically different when kept in a smaller shoal.

Ah brilliant, I believe my LFS has these, will it matter if the ones I get are smaller than this one? (Obviously bigger than oscar dinner size though)

It may not to the SD, as long as you get a good size group. I can't predict if your oscars might think that quarter or smaller sized dollars are good to try to eat.

I have a mixed group of 11 SD's. Five are Stripped and six Spotted. The only thing you have to worry about is if they are too small and the O thinks its food.

When I added the Spotted SD's one was smaller and Toni had a go at it. But it was too tall for her to eat so now she knows she can't eat them so just chases the whole group around at times, not going after individuals.

So ya just make sure they are bigger than your Oscar's mouth.20180610_160608.jpg

SD grow fast. If you need to grow them out in the 34 gallon you just got if the LFS only has bite size ones. I'd have a school of 10 or so in a 155.

I had a silver dollar do fine alone with 2 oscars, after a while he just schooled around with them.
