I have several questions regarding silver dollars.
1- can they be kept with live plants or will they simply devour all the live plants in the tank?
2- what is the minimum number of silver dollars that i could have?
3- will a small school of silver dollars be able to live safely with a firemouth and convict cichlid?
4- if so, can i put a small school of them in a 38gal tank with a firemouth and convict cihlid?

Living plants do not last with them although you might be able to get away with some like java fern or java moss. Ive got a gorup of around 20 odd cant remember the exact amount now nearly fully grown dollars or mixed species (metynnis/myleus) and they are very happy but also in one of my 6x2x2 tanks i have a shoal of 7 spotted dollars and are very happy. Id say the minium size group would be to have around 4-5 as this helps make them feel more secure and helps cut down on skitishness.

But your tank isnt that big. Try for a group of spotted dollars as ive found these to be slower growing and dont get as big, my origonal spottys are only around 4.5-5" now and ive had them 2-3yrs now. Also they are veryh pretty, and one of the better looking species.

Right now i have crypts and anubias. Uve heard that crypts are bad tasting and that the anubias will withstand the dollars biting... Is thistrue?
Also, would i be able to keep 3? Or is 4 the min. number?

Im not really up on my plant species so i dont want to say really....

And to be honest id say 4 or 5 as a minium but in your size tank id make it 3-4.

Ok. And ill go with the spotted dollars. Thatll take some time though as my lfs usually has a tank full of various kinds and they only get 1 or 2 spotteds each shipment. Oh well itll be worth it.

Don't count on your crypts or anubias lasting. Will do fine with convicts and firemouths but would be better off with much more swimming room. I have nine in the pond and they school at high speeds everywhere. Lot a fun to watch and something you'll never see in your tank.

I agree they definitly give a tank that added motion and have the ability to livin up the other species as well.
