silver dollar related to piranha?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If I remember correctly Pacus, Silver Dollars, and Wimples are all cousins of the Pygocentrus piranhas. Which are the True Piranhas.

The Serrasalmus and similar species are closer to the true piranhas than SD's and Pacus are.

So in a way, your cousin is right, but they aren't that close.

BTW, piranhas are also related to tetras, since they're all the same genus. And whomever would like to supply the genus name, that'd be great!! >.<

"Characins..."This is what Neon Tetra and the like are labeled under...Please correct me if I am wrong...This is all coming from the top of brain....Piranha ARE big Tetra with teeth....

I thought it was Characins, but I didn't want to accidentally label them with the family name of goldfish!! >< or, I could go get my aquaria encyclopedia, and quit asking!! lol

*slaps forehead* I'll post the answer later

It is Characin....;). Silver Dollars, Pacu, Piranha, Neon/Cardinals, they are all Characins. Great fish, almost every one every where that has ever kept fish has at some point in time had some sort of Characin in their tanks. Its inevitable.

of course they're related...Silver dollars belong to the group of herbivorous piranhas...

They are not in the same Genus however. The genus is the name given before the species name.

For example Pygocentrus <== Genus Nattererii <==species.
