So I brought 15 sd nothing special just the normal sd's. They are all starting to get red anal fins. Does this mean they are all male? Please tell me I'm wrong and I'm not unlucky enough to get 15 males?

Don't the males have a "bump" on the anal fin, while the females are more straight? I know this is the case with our 13 Metynnis fasciatus (Striped silver dollar).

So the red anal fin doesn't mean they are male. No just standard dollars

For what its worth, my female has a "lobe" shaped anal fin and my male has more of a "straight" one. I've seen them spawn many times in the six years I've had them, so I'm pretty sure I've got their sexes right. :) Some pics for reference below

Two Bucks (Him) Notice how his anal fin is flat all the way down?

And I couldn't find a photo of One Buck (his wife) but this is a pic of the little munted dollar my hubby fell in love with, and her fin is the same shape as One Buck's is so I assume her to be a "her". See the lobe shape at the end of her fin?

I'm not sure how much it helps now, if at all. But good luck. :)

Ye that help a lot thanks.
Could you tell that as a young age? Or is this something you have noticed as they got older

I didn't notice it until they were about 4 inches, but I was very new to the hobby at that time. Since gaining the knowledge I have now, I am able to tell from about 2 inches upwards - if the lobe has taken shape. All the juveniles I see in the LFS all have straight anal fins when under 2 inches, and the "lobe" shows up as they grow. Hope this helps. :)
