Have a 180g. current stock is:

1 F RTM
2 F Polleni
2 F Cubans
2 m/1 f thoricthys ellioti
1 F Festae
3 rafaels, 2 plecos
6 black bar SD's

Thinking of pulling the polleni, and possibly adding a salvini and another yet to be determined.

Apart from the SD's and maybe a couple of the Rafael cats nothing is more than about 5" yet..

The SD's are closer to 6" or so. I am getting pretty tired of their nervousness, and dread to think what these guys will be like once they get closer to full size. They are pigs and certainly top of the food chain when it comes to getting their fair share.. (and then some)

I didn't realize when I got these how big they would get, I understand some SD's don't get quite so big.

Anyways, what are my options for a 'target' fish if there any apart from SD's (open to other SD's if they are smaller and not as nervous..)

The ideal would be something that gets no bigger than around 6-8" and doesn't spaz whenever a light gets turned on.. I've thought of just removing the SD's and not adding a dither, maybe I have the population already to be able to consider that as an option..

I would just remove the SDs and not replace them. You have enough cichlids in the tank to not really require dithers. The best targets for cichlids are other cichlids, and you have that covered.

This is a noob question but what is a "target" fish?.

A fish used to disperse the aggression of an agressive fish. So if you have 4 target fish, the aggressive fish may spread the aggression across the 4 target fish rather than concentrate the aggression on a single fish and eventually kill it.

Ohh ok that makes since. Sorry to hijack the post for a question like that but figured better than starting a entirely new thread for a quick answer.

maybe tinfoil barbs im actually using the sd,s now myself I like the different body style but the bards are nervous as well and get to be a decent size

I have the same issue want to rehome the sd's they arent skittish at all but cant stand how they eat like lawn mowers

Try using filament barbs. They only get 5"-6" max size and are perfect dither fish. I had six of them in a 55 for dithers. They are pigs and will eat anything.

Thanks for the suggestions, I think I will just remove them. A lighter bioload won't hurt.
