I’m looking for dithers for my 125 to go with a jd, banded leporinus, convict, and rainbow cichlid. In their current tank, there is a small group of assorted dithers (ba tetras, Aussie rainbows, giant danio). In another (overstocked) tank I have 3 silver dollars; ideally I would move them over into the 125 to help make space in there.
Right now my plan for dithers would be to either increase the BA tetra school or to get a few more silvers and move them over.
The main issue with the silvers is that if it goes south, now I have even more dollars to transfer back into an already heavily stocked tank.
With enough hiding spots, would silver dollars work or should I stick with the school of tetras? Is there a different dither I should consider?

some good options there. tetras and other smaller dithers look great but theres one huge takeaway when you want to use them as dithers when you have a cichlid present like a JD or convict. tetras dont have long life spans and if they cant reproduce ( young wont survive with cichlids most likely) youll be replacing them every year or two. thats my experience anyways. silver dollars can be hit or miss as they can be nippy and skiddish. but they do have fairly long life spans. imo its hard to beat the hardiness and schooling behavior of the rainbows. but where i live they are pretty expensive. not sure about where you live.

Tetragonopterus argenteus aka redfin argenteus tetras. Not quite as beefy as metynnis species, but still very impressive, active shoaling fish. This is an old vid of a group of 9 i had for a few years in a 150g, they are nearly maxed out here.

Those are really nice - kinda remind me of wimple piranhas! I’ll have to see if those are at the lfs when I’m there (or I’ll probably wind up getting the Buenos).
One other thought that is usually at the lfs is sailfin tetras. Do they make good dithers? From what I’ve read they seem to not really act like traditional tetras but more like cichlids.
