I've been reading some of the posts on silver saum. are they really as rare as im reading? we just purchased two from out local pet store. they are about 2 inches. we aren't sure what sex they are either. but when would we be able to tell the sex and what signs should we look for? also i have read some threads on "short bodied" silver saums. what does this mean? why does it occur? do people like this or try to avoid it.... confused, looking for helpppp:)

i wouldnt say that silver saums are all that rare just not as common as the regular GTs most stores carry, i think it just depends more on your area and what the demand is there for them, as for sexing and all that it will be the same as with Gold saums, males will have more irridescent coloring in their bodies and designs within their fins and not as much blue or smudging on their cheeks. as for short-bodied variants this is just a mutation that causes them to have a scrunched up shorter body compared to a normal one, i personally dont like the look of it at all but others do its really just a matter of personal preference im not sure if there are any extra health issues associated with the short-bodied mutation

oh and WELCOME TO MFK! where are the pics of your new guys? :)

Ive seen a good amount of Silver Saums at LFSs but they all have been short bodied for some reason...
and Sarah88 is correct on sexing GTs. You cant base your assumption on trailers or nuchal humps all the time, its they body shape, coloration, facial patterns, and vents that help determine their sex. For example, alot of people believed my female to be male simply because of her awesome trailers, coloration, and small nuchal hump.

They're not as common as gold saum but they're not "rare" either, it mostly depends on where you live.

What is rare is the true green terror, which is not gold or silver saum... but this

Thats interesting you say true GT. Looking at your pics it sort of looks like the true GT's i bought from Jeff Rapps. There is no color at all in the fins which is how mine look. Try to get some more pics from the side to see the tail and dorsal fins. Here are a few pics of mine at 2". So if anyone was or is ever looking for pics of juvie True Green Terrors, here they are. Straight from rapps himself.

well it will be easy enough to tell if they are true rivulatus or not once they are grown since the colors on the scales are opposite to that of the saums, sometimes young saums dont have much color on the edging until they get a little bigger either and i have seen chain stores like petsmart label regular GTs as "true GT" just for the marketing
