I have no idea why they are so skittish. I know they are quite nervous as a species but it seems to be getting to a joke now. I opened the window which is like 4 metres from the tank and it make a small unsticking noise and they shot over to the other side of the tank (foolishly they all have bumps on their noses now). They are always taking knocks now because of their stupid nervous behaviour.

Also just eating one of them moves quickly it makes them all crap themselves. Even when I go near the tank to feed they are like it. They where always nervous but its just a joke now, what can I do; aside from sell them and find another fish?

Try adding tall plants and driftwood. The added security of hiding places might make them relax a bit. I know that helped when I had piranhas.

How many do you have? what size tank?

100 UK gal. (1 uk gal IS 4.5LITRES) I have 6, they are about 5 -7 inches at the moment.

I have some tallish plants (fake) at the back of the tank, and rocks and stuff.

Hmmm good size tank and a school of them.

As suggested above maybe some tall plants etc might make them less jumpy, but I know from experiance how bad they are, my mother-in-law has a tank around the same size as yours, I sometimes use it to grow fish on for my main tank, and they are the only fish I have been around where when the time comes to catch the fish back out I WILL get soaked from head to foot.

Hers go nuts at the smallest movement as well.

i would say add a school of small active fish like danios or something. when mine wouldnt come out it was because they were the only ones in the tank and believe it or not needed more fish in it to feel secure. (I had a school of 8)

and u've definitely not has an amm or nitrite spike ??
