Hey guys! Peaches here again with a question on Arowanas...

~I know just a little about this ancient fish but I would like to know: What is the most ideal tank size for Silver Tailed Arowanas?

Thanks to all the Arowana experts out there!! :D

Peaches~ ;)

tank size is a matter of opinion, and it varies from person to person

alot of people (notably asian fishkeepers, who are absolutely notorious for cramming fish together in as small a space as possible) say 125g is fine

alot of people say 180g is fine

alot of people say 240g is fine

I personally think silver arrowanas are beyond long-term care in any conventional sized tank, but im in the minority. Like pacu and large catfish, they are a huge fish that-- unfortunately-- has been made very common and very cheap in the aquarium hobby, and is consequently prone to maltreatment.

An extremely strong lid is necessary to prevent the arrowana from jumping out of its tank. In the wild, they regularly jump to seize prey.

sliver aro's grow fast up until around 14" ime
and can get up to 3-4 feet
avg. size in the home tank is around around 3feet at most

they dont get as thick as asian aro,so turning is a bit easier
125 should be fine for some time , then i think a 180 is bare min for full grown aro

180 should be fine for quite some time. They are agile and could do turns easily not unlike jardinis and asian aros. Personally i would go for black aros if the silvers are farm bred.

Hello Again!
Thanks very much to buddah, redtailfool, rayman, and piranha for their great and expert suggestions. That helped a lot! Perhaps one day I'll have a gigantic tank to keep an Arowana in! I absolutely love these fish....

To- Piranha:
Yes, It is strange around here how EVERY petstore sells the cutest of cute baby pacus. I am always tempted to get one because they are so irressitable to me! I know it's much wiser to leave them be though because of their huge size. I just wonder how they make any sale at all of these fish since they get so huge? I guess people just buy them because they are cute and neat looking and soon discover how large they will grow. It's funny like i've read before on "www.aqualandpetsplus.com" about pacu care and they jokingly said--
Tank size: a 1/4 an acre would be nice!

I wonder how large a red-bellied pacu would grow to be in like an 80 gallon tank...I say 80 because it provides a good and wide turning space for very large fish. I know though probably, this size won't be enough space.

Well, thanks a bunch again to everybody whom are nice enough to take the time to answer my silly questions on monster fish!! :D

Till later guys, I'll talk to ya later!

I concure with many of the other about a 240 being good for awhile.

Looks like I'm the rainy parade but IMO NONE of the above tanks will be ok long term. Silvers can hit 3 feet pretty easy and NONE of the above tanks are over 24 inches front to back, so how's that fish going to turn around without contorting?? If you really want Aros, you need an indoor pond, a BIG indoor pond, or at least a tank that is 8 feet long and at least 36" front to back. It is cheaper to build a pond! Then could put some nice rays in with it.

Silver aros are very flexable(well mine was) the last one i had...R.I.P.... Would stick his head in a hafl log that had about 4in cave width and he would go in and turn around inside it to get out :WHOA: and he was 11in so i would say that a 240 would be great but bigger the better. oh ya weigh down the top with alot of weight(not to much to break tank tho) or use clamps. when Aros get scared they jump(and they are very skittish for awhile). I would say 3' at the most and that would be big for one in a home aquarium. the biggest one on this site was Jens...R.I.P.... andit was a Black Aro that was close to 3'. If del see this he has one that is 22" or 28"(can't remeber) but i think his is in a 180
