Just added a silver arowana in with my black aro. Wondering what I should look for. When I first added it the black bit the the silver a couple times but it didnt look like serious biting and now the silver occasionally bites the black but not serious bites ????? So what could this mean? are there such things as play bites with fishes?? I dont want to lose my black the black is smaller than the silver.... and what can I do?

they will go back and forth...you don't state the sizes of your aros so i don't want to tell you to wait it out cause a small "play bite" could result in an aro death at smaller sizes...they will almost always nip at eachothers fins, but if they are using more then 1/4 of their mouth it is not nipping, but actual biting...i have had a few aros that dies from getting their tail bitten in a bad way...the tail started to lose color and the aro died... that was just from a tail bite that shredded alilte meat along with the tail, but it didn't look bad at all...on the same note i have just had my black regrow 1/4 of its entire length after a random fight...if it is concerning you, witch i think it is, the only thing you can do to garentee you will not lose any fish is to seperate them and try to mix them again when bigger...

Dangerous mix, if biting back and forth is equal then both aro may survive. If one aro become dominate it will chase the other aro to death. Looks for split fins, especially if on one more then the other. If you see one of the two sitting on the bottom of the tank, then you better separate cause the end is near.

What are the reasons for it to be a dangerous mix?

I actually took the silver out. I saw it bite the black and held the tail in its mouth for about3 to 5 seconds after that I didnt want to take the risk.

But right now the big silver about 15 inches give or take is in a tank with my 12 inch jardini any opinions or heads up on that?

So far they are doing good neither has messed with each other yet. And hoping they never do.

How big are they? Silver will grow faster, which could lead to trouble when the size difference gets greater.

Are silvers more aggressive? How do silvers do with other arowanas?
The guy I bought this silver from had like 16 silvers before in a tank at a time but now has four together..

be careful with that jardini because they are very aggressive.

silvers are more aggro than blacks, but waaay less than jars-I think silvers are easier than most to community with other aros (blacks are easiest IMO)-
the guy you got your silver from may have had 4 silvers together, but, 4 silvers, is not the same as 1 jar and 1 silver, I mean, were talking apples and orangutans here- totally different-
if you have the room put the jar in a tank by himself, and keep him there for life-
get a few more of the same size silvers, put them all in a giant tank and wait for the black to get close in size to them and try again-
it still might not work though- good luck

Sounds like your already seeing why it is a dangerous mix. IMO anytime you have multiple arowana it is a dangerous mix. Especially when first tried, time will help but I believe there is always a chance of pending disaster with these monsters.
