First off, I'm a complete noob when it comes to plant lighting, so I apologize for asking questions where the answer is probably obvious. I have two black aquarium hood casings that don't work, so I want to replace the whole fixture inside the black casing with one of the cheapo kind from Wal-mart. I'm running a 20 gallon aquarium with a few plants- java moss, java fern, hornwort, two kinds of anubias, and water sprite. I tried some spiral val, but my fish uprooted it out of the pot it was in. When I put sand in the bottom, I'd like to try something like the spiral val again, some type of grassy plant, at least. I'd also really like to try to grow some Riccia fluitans, most likely just free-floating at the surface. I had Riccia in a tank before, and absolutely loved that stuff.
My other tank is a 20 gallon with baby axolotls in it. I don't want super bright light over them, as they don't like it, but I've got some java moss in with them, and I wouldn't mind adding a couple other things (maybe water sprite, as it spreads in the other tank? Java fern?).
They have two that looked good to me-
a 23" F13T5 fixture, where the bulb is 14 watts, 700 lumens, 4,200 Kelvin.
And a 24" F17T8 "Grow Light" fixture that runs with 17 watts, 1,093 lumens, 7,800 and CRI=11.
Would the "Grow Light" fixture work well over my planted tank? I'm thinking the other one isn't as bright, it will go over the axolotls. Is it good enough for the plants I have in there?
Thanks!
