I helped a friend set up a tank last week and I realized that I picked up many simple tricks over the years. I thought it will be good to start a thread with little tricks which we picked up that most people over look. I will like to learn some too.

Each tip should be two lines. The first is the tip the second is the reason. These should be general tips that can be used on any species or size tank.

1) Buy the blue fish net with fine holes, as oppose to the green net. Fish fins won't get stuck in the blue net.

2) Make sure your filter intake cap is on. Fish will get stuck in it.

3) Get a good siphon, hose, and faucet hook up for water changes. The easier it is to do a water change, the more water will get changed.

4) Some useful house hold products I found useful for water changes are the flexible hose (as seen on TV), flexible ties (it's like moldable subber rope), used to hold the water tube in the tank and 5 gallon Poland Spring bottles if I don't want to run a hose. Easier water changes equal more water changes and lots of water on the floor is not fun.

Keep a few five gallon buckets on hand..They are a good back up in case your Python or similar water change system fails.

Something happen to yours?

Yea. Doing water changes this morning and got the first 3 tanks done. Starting filling up the 4th tank and walked out my room to a puddle on the floor. Luckily i saw it when it was only about 1 gallon. The hose has a slit in it. So i had to refill 50% of the 125 with buckets. Kind of sucked

have at least 1 sponge filter and battery powered air pump per tank. that way if your power goes out your fish don't die

That's too bad man,got any idea how the hose got split?

I've actually been meaning to replace mine for quite some time now.I'm kind of used to the buckets at this point lol!....Onward...Keep tank lights of for a few hours when introducing new fish to your tank.I find that it helps the newbie settle in.

Resist the temptation to overfeed.it only degrades your water quality because un-eaten food spoils, it also gets sucked into filters.
