I am getting a tank made that will have a single 1.5" bulkhead as a drain drilled in the upper right corner of the back panel. The reason I want 1 vs. 2 is space constraints, I could make 2 work, but I much prefer 1. Tank is 75 gallons, odd dimensions. I went to buy a mag12 yesterday and turned out it was a mag 18, didn't have a sticker on it but I compared it to my mag 18's and it looks identical. The output will be sitting at about a 5 foot head, plus pump is used, so I would guess anywhere between 1000-1200 gph pumping through it. The return will me 1.5" diameter flex tubing going down about 3 feet, and then 90 degrees for a 3 foot horizontal run into the sump.

Do you guys think a single 1.5" bulkhead with my plumbing setup will be able to handle the flow the mag 18 will put out at 4-5 foot head? I really would prefer not to dial it down, I would much rather use that pump as a backup and grab a mag12.

Secondary question, for a stingray puppy growout tank, dimensions 48" long, 30" wide, 12" high, approx 75 gals, is this tooooooo much turnover? Any stingray guys know if the approximate 15x turnover for that tank will be too much for the little pups to handle? I would not stick a powerhead in there if it made a difference.

Cheers.

A 1.5" should handle 1000 gph no problem.

I don't think the turnover in the tank should be an issue. If you're especially worried about the flow you could diffuse it with a spraybar or multiple nozzles

You could always tee off the return plumbing back down to the sump again and use a ball valve to redirect some flow versus throttling back the pump with a ballvalve.

Cool, thanks for the response. I assumed GPH shouldnt be an issue with a 1.5" because my research indicated that it should handle something like 1400-1600, but I personally NEVER trust these max numbers on stuff, I always tend to reduce them a good amount just to be safe. Good idea with teeing off the return, I'm sure I could tee it off effectively back to my sump somewhere so it polishes the water a bit more. I'll tinker with it, see what happens. Hopefully wont need a spraybar, just don't wanna overwhelm the little guys.
