In my head
I'm probably gonna get flamed but... I'm considering getting a single 3 inch Discus for my 55 community tank. It will most likely be stunted and a little lonley but... I guess if no one calls PETA... I'll tell the kids yes. Of coarse I'll establish a consistant environment first. I'm not that gonna get one if I can't keep him healthy. I've read at least one post which said it would be ok even with my amended city water. I guess I'm posting this for whatever feedback I can get good or bad. Tips..etc?

discus are social fish. they do best in groups of six or more. can it be done? yes, as long as your willing to have a stunted and less colorful fish. if you put it in a tank with fast moving aggressive fish then it will wind up getting sick and die. you asked for advice and I'll give you mine. find another fish.

discus like to be with other discus, in groups, they are a social fish. discus can get stressed out very easy. personally i wouldn't house a single discus in a tank. i suggest researching them and even check out simply discus forum. :)

I can live with stunted but If it doesn't have any color then no.

Neon Tetras, cory, and dwarf frogs would be tank mates. Too agressive?

6 stunted discus would have color? 6 full size adults would be way to much for a 55 gallon.

Another peacefull colorfull 4-5 inch tank mate for tetras? I would consider that for sure! I don't know of any.

why do you say six stunted discus, unless thats the way your buying them. you can keep six in a 55 as long as you have enough filtration and keep up with your wc's. a 75 is better and not very expensive. the frog may be trouble but I don't know much about them. the only problems with neons is that they stay small and discus do not. neons are a natural food source for discus. many people keep them together and many neons wind up disappearing from the tank.

If I get 6 3 inch Discus, I will not be able to feed them 4 times a day and change 25 gallons of water daily...Just being realistic. 25 a week... sure. So I figure they will not grow well.

I see the neon problem. I really like those lemons you have. Really 6 full size Discus in a 55 show? I could just wait till after the divorce and copy your setup.

I guess it comes down to lots of water changes. I need to look into how much and how often. I have hard city water. I can make it better by aging with peat for a few days but I can't get an ro right now. That's my delemia. If i need new water everyday then I may be out of options.

Why do you want your fish to be stunted?
6 Adult Discus in a 55 gal should be fine.
Plenty of water changes and high quality food and they will develop nicely.

Do you know the exact readings of your water? Ph and hardness?

In Europe we have Stendker Discus which I believe are available in the US too. They are reported to be more tolerant than Asian fish.

Otherwise try some Angels.
These are ok as an individual, or in a group.
And they are more hardy.
