I was thinking about going with 1 or 2 Oscars but im kind of leaning towards something a little more exotic.

A fish that when people see it will have to stop and look

So im looking for something that grows rather quickly.

Something that is somewhat on the calm side would be a plus but not required

Isnt so exotic that i cant find it or is over a few hundred bucks

And something that can stay in there lifelong

Basically just looking for a nice show piece

Fahaka puffer and plants. He would eat his roommates and gets big. That's what i have in my 150.

For me, a male Nandopsis haitiensus would be the ticket, and it reaches about 15" (I consider max size fish for a 150 gal tank), and under the right conditions grows very quickly (warm water (mid 80s'F), plenty of water changes).
As long as it's alone, it would be calm, although there was one at one of the the last ACA conventions, that would splash water on any passerby that came too close. It would wait until you looked in its tank, then with a flip of the tail, send a shower of water in your face.
And although you probably won't find one at LFS, if you talk to someone at one of the Minnesota Aquarium Society meetings, bet they'd hook you up. BobR is always on it, as far as what cichlids are available in a few hundred mile radius.

A pearesi would get 14-16" and would probably do fine with a group of smaller schooling fish and a bottom dweller. They are very outgoing like an Oscar and have a very big presence and personality.

So change of plans. I was at the lfs seeing if anything peeked my interest and they had a beautiful 6 inch ornate bichir so whatever i go with will have to get along with the ornate

Beta fish.... But seriously tho, throw a fire eel in their he won't mess with yo ornate
