single oscar in a 65 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The filtration rate is great, but the oscar will most likely outgrow that tank within the first year depending on how you feed it.

What's the footprint of the tank? I think 48x18 is the smallest for a single Oscar

Edit: The turnover sounds ok. Watch for digging which could dirty the filter faster. Also if you feed him more then once a day, check the filter often.

Turnover is fine, but filtration is never a substitute for water changes. If this is a common 65g, being 3ft long, that is restrictive for an Oscar that does best with horizontal swimspace. At a foot long the fish is already 1/3 the tank length. Thats far from ideal.

All big cichlids need tankspace, not just Oscars. There are many that wont come near the foot long mark, and are very attractive. Salvini, Nicaraguan, Angels and Discus to name but a few.

I made a custom sump out of plastic containers from TARGET.............3 drawer plastic drawers were used for the media tower.............
